ARROYO-FONSECA, Paola  e  ORTEGA-CAUDILLO, Lourdes. Breast reconstruction campaign "Women supporting women". Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2017, vol.43, n.1, pp.97-102. ISSN 1989-2055.

In México breast cancer ranks first in malignant neoplasms in women. This has caused a serious health problem that has led, by decree, to care for all women with this pathology. Unfortunately this decree cannot be carried out fully since the country's health institutions are insufficient to care for this population, and in many cases immediate reconstruction cannot be performed after oncological treatment, so it is very common for these patients be discharged without any reconstruction. For this reason, many altruistic organizations support these women with campaigns not only in large cities, but also seek to cover those patients who, because they live in rural areas, do not have the opportunity to receive a complete treatment after mammary cancer. Drs. Alfonso Vallarta and David Trejo, Mexican plastic surgeons, had the idea of carrying out a breast reconstruction campaign with the support of the Mexican Navy Secretariat in the General Naval High Specialty Hospital, but with a special characteristic, that those who made these breast reconstructions were women specialists in Plastic, Aesthetic and Reparative Surgery, all members of the AMCPER (Mexican Association of Plastic, Aesthetic and Reconstructive Surgery). This is how the campaign "Women supporting women" was born.
