TAMAYO CARBON, Alicia María; RODRIGUEZ GARCELL, Rafael; BURBANO MELO, Sebastián y CUASTUMAL FIGUEROA, Diana Katherine. Qualification of the use of implants in simple breast augmentation at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, Cuba. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2024, vol.50, n.2, pp.177-184. Epub 24-Jul-2024. ISSN 1989-2055. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0376-78922024000200010.
Background and objective.
Augmentative mastoplasty techniques are mainly linked to implants and their safety. Of interest is the collection of data and the creation of national registries of the use of breast implants that provide relevant information when determining the incidence of long-term results and complications. However, we believe that the scarcity of countries that have this type of registries, and especially in the Latin American area, makes it necessary to collect some form of data on the most frequent use of this type of implants by reference health centers that contribute, in some way, to this knowledge and confirm the need to create relevant national registries.
Our aim is to rate the use of breast prostheses at the Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital in Havana, Cuba, as a national reference hospital center, in order to provide local data on their use in breast augmentation surgery, which may be useful for future researchs.
Methods.
Observational and cross-sectional study in 419 women with indication for primary augmentation mastoplasty treated by Plastic Surgery at Ameijeiras Hospital, between January/2017 and December/2021.
Results.
The age group between 19 and 29 years predominated with 54.41%. The main reason for consultation was hypomastia in 59.7% and 95% received round implants. In 91.9%, implants volumes between 250 and 400 cc were used. The profile was high at 90.7%, the implant surface was 93.5% microtextured, the filling material was 93.5% cohesive silicone gel, the most used brand was Mentor® with 46.8%, the approach in 69.5% was through the inframammary fold and the implant placement plane was submuscular in 97%.
Conclusions.
Our study summarize the information related to breast implants in the last years to provide data from a national reference center in Cuba and contribute from our country to information on the most frequent use of implants in breast augmentation that may be useful in future studies of more broad level and establish the need to create true national implant registries that provide quality and continuous information over time.
