Resumen
GONZALEZ GONZALEZ, Víctor et al. First breast reconstruction campaign in Cuenca, Ecuador: “Rebuilding breasts, we rebuild lives”. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2024, vol.50, n.2, pp.231-238. Epub 24-Jul-2024. ISSN 1989-2055. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0376-78922024000200016.
Background and objective.
Breast reconstructive surgery represents a fundamental part of the treatment of patients suffering from breast cancer. In our country, Ecuador, there is no official or health program that includes breast reconstruction as a catastrophic disease, and many patients are only mastectomized and not reconstructed. Once these difficulties in patients with low economic resources were detected, it was decided to carry out the first altruistic breast reconstruction campaign in our country.
Methods.
From CIPAM (Comprehensive Center for Breast Pathology), created in Cuenca, Ecuador, in 2019 as a private medical center that involves a group of specialists in the different areas of Medicine related to breast pathology, it was decided to carry out the first altruistic breast reconstruction campaign in Ecuador consisting on 2 stages.
Results.
The first stage of the campaign was carried out in October 2021: 10 patients were operated on who underwent autologous and alloplastic deferred reconstructions such as TRAM, DIEP flaps, Latissimus dorsi flap plus expander, etc. The second stage was in October 2022: we operated on 7 of these patients who underwent procedures to complete their breast reconstruction such as lipofilling, contralateral mastopexy, areola tattoo, among others.
Conclusions.
The execution of this campaign has allowed us to raise more awareness about breast cancer and its consequences. Helping these women guides us to understand the humanitarian contribution that we must make from the place where we belong as doctors and as a society
