Resumen

DIAZ-GRANADOS-ZUNIGA, Joaquín Alfredo et al. BurnAid: artificial intelligence at the service of initial management of the burned patient. Cir. plást. iberolatinoam. [online]. 2024, vol.50, n.3, pp.319-326.  Epub 22-Nov-2024. ISSN 1989-2055.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s0376-78922024000300011.

Background and objective.

The initial management of the burned patient is crucial to ensure successful outcomes; however, there is a significant deficit in basic knowledge of this aspect in primary care settings in Latin America. This deficiency contributes to high mortality rates, placing this region below Africa and Southeast Asia in terms of burn patient outcomes.

To address this issue, "BurnAid," an innovative mobile application designed to provide accurate and up-to-date guidance in the initial management of burns, has been developed.

Objective:

The aim of this project is to improve primary burn care through the use of the "BurnAid" mobile application.

Methods.

Using artificial intelligence, "BurnAid" allows for the calculation of burn extent relative to the total body surface area affected, considering etiology, patient weight, and time elapsed since trauma. The application guides the user step-by-step through the initial management process of the burned patient, offering personalized recommendations based on specific patient data.

Results.

"BurnAid" represents an innovative and timely solution to enhance primary burn care, providing healthcare professionals with a practical and effective tool to optimize patient outcomes in a wide range of clinical settings.

Conclusions.

The development and evaluation of "BurnAid" show its potential to address critical needs in the initial management of burns, offering an effective and accessible solution to improve patient outcomes.
