Resumen
VALLEJO PAREJA, Miguel A.. Perspectives in the study and psychological treatment of chronic pain. Clínica y Salud [online]. 2008, vol.19, n.3, pp.417-430. ISSN 2174-0550.
Psychological approach to chronic pain must achieve two goals: first, acting upon the pain to let natural regulation systems operate properly and second, preventing the pain from taking over patient's life -i.e., recognizing the problems and retrieving valuable activities, otherwise pain will not let him/her be a person. In both cases, pain must be acknowledged and its existence accepted. Concerning the first goal, biofeedback, neurofeedback and hypnosis are techniques that have proved their usefulness in this regard. On the other hand, the so-called third generation cognitive behavioral therapy (including contextual cognitive behavioral therapy) is seeking appropriate ways for people to regain control of their lives -making their behavior the key element in their lives in line with their values.
