For years research with quantitative approach has predominated in health and related disciplines. However, the increase in chronic terminal disease and people's needs has led to used research methods with other perspectives. Research with traditional approach used in chronic renal failure and hemodialysis has not allowed solving problems such as non-adherence to treatment and low quality of life. This article aimed analyzing the relevance of the qualitative approach as a research method in health and hemodialysis. Four issues related to kidney disease, hemodialysis and research were reviewed. Qualitative research in this area is a fundamental method to obtain information from the perspective of people and to development intervention strategies in nursing.
