Aim: to analyze care from the dialectic between understanding and explanation. Methodology: theoretical review their analysis of the rupture between the paradigms of science; and revolves around three aspects: nursing care in chronic situations, the concepts of metaparadigm Fawcett and the proposed Ricoeur between explanation and understanding. It is concluded that to bring the object of knowledge and disciplinary development care for people with chronic diseases can be taken from the form of a methodological dualism under the gaze of complementarity to the extent that become important needs be as important factor in the construction of a human care.
