Abstract

ARROGANTE, Óscar. Structural models in Nursing: methodology and application in nursing research. Index Enferm [online]. 2018, vol.27, n.1-2, pp.67-71. ISSN 1699-5988.

Structural Equation Models (SEM) methodology is one the most powerful tools to test theoretical foundations in a large number of disciplines. Currently, it is a rising technique in quantitative research. However, it is a relatively recent multivariate technique so SEM methodology may be unknown to nursing researchers. The paper aims to help nursing researchers to understand this technique. Therefore, the paper goals are: 1) To describe SEM methodology (requirements, statistical programs, variable types, model types, graphic representation and steps for developing a model); and 2) To show more clearly the methodology and the usefulness of SEM by means of an example in nursing research. In conclusions section, the possible applications of SEM in nursing discipline are shown.

Keywords : Structural equation models; Research; Nursing.
