Abstract
ABADES PORCEL, Mercedes and RAYON VALPUESTA, Esperanza. Ageing in Spain: it's a challenge or social problem?. Gerokomos [online]. 2012, vol.23, n.4, pp.151-155. ISSN 1134-928X. https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/S1134-928X2012000400002.
The pace of population ageing is presently faster in Spain than in other European Union countries. Predictions that the over-80-year group will continue to swell suggest that the dependency ratio will increase in coming years. In this paper we present an update that provides the basis for reflection about the significance of aging in Spain. We discuss the role of caregivers for the elderly and the impact of the constant changes on the social and health systems. We examine ageing as a serious challenge to the society, and emphasize the need for changes in the healthcare model, greater sensitivity, and ethical and moral commitment to ensure quality of care.
