Abstract
CORNES FERNANDEZ, Maider and CALLE CALLE, María Dolores. Elder abuse: analysis of screening tools. Critical review of the scientific literature. Gerokomos [online]. 2023, vol.34, n.3, pp.168-175. Epub Mar 04, 2024. ISSN 1134-928X.
Objectives:
To study the usefulness of the different tools used in the detection of elder abuse.
Methodology:
Critical review of the literature in the Medline, CINAHL, Cuiden, EMBASE and PsycINFO databases and manual search in Cochrane, the journal Gerontologist and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria: articles in Spanish and English; people aged 60 years and older and their caregivers, regardless of race, health or socioeconomic status. To ensure the quality of the studies, the criteria of the CASPe guidelines were used.
Results:
Of the 594 articles found in the search, 21 were included in the final analysis. A total of 16 screening tools were found, which were analyzed qualitatively and psychometrically with the corresponding subcategories. They were classified into those oriented to the care recipient and those oriented to the caregiver.
Conclusions:
It is difficult to choose a tool to be used in general practice. However, the E-IOA scale, specifically appendix B, is the most recommended tool for detecting elder abuse. The nursing professional should be the professional who leads the comprehensive assessment of the detection of elder abuse.
