Abstract

CARRION-JIMENEZ, Andoni; SILVA-PEREIRA, Natalia  and  LOPEZ-CASANOVA, Pablo. Is it safe to reuse opened-but-unused wound dressings? A systematic review of the literature. Gerokomos [online]. 2024, vol.35, n.3, pp.201-207.  Epub Mar 19, 2025. ISSN 1134-928X.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s1134-928x2024000300011.

Objectives:

To study the clinical practice of practicing Spanish clinical nurses with respect to cutting dressings and reusing unused remains of previously opened containers, on the same or other patients, and its relationship with the level of care, experience professional or access difficulties.

Methodology:

Systematized review of the literature carried out in September 2023 in the PubMed, Cochrane and CUIDEN databases.

Results:

8 works have been reviewed (1 systematic review, 2 literature reviews and 5 clinical studies), all in English, without any research work in the Spanish environment.

Conclusions:

The evidence found is not sufficient to develop recommendations for clinical practice that determine the suitability of reusing dressing cuttings, but we do find safety and regulatory reasons for their use.

Keywords : Wound dressings; wounds; reused; open-but-unused.
