Abstract

LORENTE-RODRIGUEZ, Miguel; LOPEZ-CASANOVA, Pablo; VERDU-SORIANO, José  and  BERENGUER-PEREZ, Miriam. Use of rosehip oil in wound healing. Gerokomos [online]. 2024, vol.35, n.4, pp.266-270.  Epub Mar 19, 2025. ISSN 1134-928X.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s1134-928x2024000400010.

Objectives:

To investigate the properties and composition of rosehip oil and its efficacy as a healing agent in wounds in humans and animals.

Methodology:

On one hand, an exploratory narrative review was conducted with the aim of describing the compositions and properties of rosehip oil. On the other hand, a literature review was carried out to analyse healing properties of rosehip oil, consulting the following databases: Pubmed, CINAHL, Scopus and BVS.

Results:

19 articles were utilised to describe the properties and composition of rosehip oil. On the other hand, 7 studies out of a total of 259 articles initially collected from consulted databases were included to analyse the role of rosehip oil as a wound healing agent, along with the clinical safety of the product.

Conclusions:

Generally, the studies obtained satisfactory results regarding the topical application of rosehip oil on wounds of various etiologies. Nevertheless, methodological limitations and significant heterogeneity of results concerning the administration pattern followed for the application of this oil, the duration of observation of healing process and treatment duration prevent rosehip oil from being recommended in clinical practice as a healing agent. Future studies and trials are necessary to provide more precise results in order to be recommended in clinical setting.
