Objective:

To know the sociodemographic profile of the elderly aged 80 and over and identify the relationship between being 80 years or older or a younger elderly person with sociodemographic and clinical variables.

Methodology:

This is a quantitative, observational, descriptive and cross-sectional study. The studied population consists of individuals aged 60 and over residing in Spain in 2020, from which a representative sample of 9,105 elderly individuals was obtained, representative not only at the national level but also by autonomous communities. The main variable analyzed is belonging to an age group (60 to 79 years or 80 years and older), and the secondary variables are divided into sociodemographic and clinical categories.

Results:

Out of the 9,105 elderly individuals, 2,356 (25.9%) were aged 80 and over. The prevalence of hypertension, acute myocardial infarction, cerebrovascular accident, diabetes mellitus and depression among the elderly aged 80 and over was 59,8%, 2,3%, 7,3%, 22,3% and 12,2%, compared to al 43,4%, 1,4%, 3%, 17,2% and 10% among the younger elderly individuals.

Conclusions:

The sociodemographic profile of a person aged 80 or over in Spain in 2020 is that of a woman, widowed, illiterate, or with incomplete primary education. The profile of the younger elderly varies in that they are married and have secondary education. The elderly aged 80 and over have higher prevalences of HTN, AMI, DM, stroke, and depression.
