Resumen

FERNANDEZ-SILVA, Carlos Alberto et al. Characteristics of gerontology training of nursing professionals in Chile. Gerokomos [online]. 2025, vol.36, n.1, pp.37-42.  Epub 05-Mayo-2025. ISSN 1134-928X.  https://dx.doi.org/10.4321/s1134-928x2025000100007.

Objective:

To identify aspects related to gerontology training in a group of nursing professionals in Chile.

Methodology:

A bivariate descriptive analysis was carried out on the data obtained through a survey prepared by the Chilean branch of the eldery health, which included 209 nursing professionals from different regions of Chile.

Results:

The average age of the population surveyed was 40.1 years, with a predominance of women (93.3%), who work mainly in the health care area, both public and private (72.7%); 16.3% have a master's degree or doctorate. A relationship was found between age and the development of research in gerontology (p = 0.02), as well as with undergraduate education (p = 0.001), and also with years of professional practice and research development (p = 0.025), among other variables. In relation to undergraduate training in gerontology, 59.3% (n = 124) reported having taken it.

Conclusions:

The development of nursing in relation to gerontological care should be strengthened, which implies reviewing undergraduate and postgraduate training in this area, in addition to health policies that facilitate the continuous training of nursing professionals.
