HERNANDEZ-MAYANGA, Patsy Judith; GALVEZ-DIAZ, Norma del Carmen  y  BARRETO-ESPINOZA, Luz Antonia. Knowledge related to skin care practices in the elderly: a cross-sectional study in a national hospital in Peru. Gerokomos [online]. 2025, vol.36, n.1, pp.57-61.  Epub 05-Mayo-2025. Aim:

To determine the relationship between the knowledge and practices of caregivers on skin care of the elderly in a national hospital in Peru.

Methods:

Quantitative, descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional study, non-experimental design, carried out at the Almanzor Aguinaga Asenjo National Hospital of EsSalud in Chiclayo (Peru) in 2023. The population consisted of 250 caregivers of elderly people admitted to the geriatric service, the sample was 108, a questionnaire validated by 3 expert judges was applied using the AIKEN validation, for reliability the Kappa concordance test was applied obtaining 0.725. Descriptive statistics were applied for data analysis.

Results:

The value of Spearman's Rho test is highly significant (p < 0.01); this indicates that there is a relationship between the knowledge and practice of the caregiver on skin care of the elderly; This relationship is moderate direct (r = 0.489) which is equivalent to saying that there are better skin care practices for the elderly when there is a high level of knowledge on the part of the caregiver.

Conclusions:

The greater the knowledge of caregivers of hospitalized elderly people in the Geriatrics Service regarding skin care, the better the practices and considering that both practices and knowledge are at a moderate level, it is necessary to carry out continuous educational programs that measure the progress of both variables.
