Abstract

GARCIA BALLESTA, Carlos; PEREZ LAJARIN, Leonor  and  COZAR HIDALGO, Antonio. New tendencies in the management of dental avulsion. RCOE [online]. 2003, vol.8, n.2, pp.177-184. ISSN 1138-123X.

Although the prevalence of dental avulsion is low (1-16% of all traumatisms), the long-term prognosis is poor, since only 4-50% of all avulsed teeth survive more than 10 years. The aim of this review article is to supplement the recently published International Association of Dental Traumatology (2001) an American Association of Endodontics (1994) guidelines on treatment of the avulsed tooth. In addition, the author´s views on the different management options available in such situations, according to the extraoral period and the degree of root development involved, and a discussion of the new tendencies in the treatment of dental avulsion are provided. The method used has been based on a Medline search of the medical literature. Conclusions: although different drugs are used to avoid or reduce the appearance of complications such as inflammatory root resorption, emphasis continues to be placed on the duration of extraoral presence, the preservation medium used, the type and duration of splinting, the state of root development and the endodontic treatment provided as the factors determining the long-term prognosis of avulsed teeth.
