This communication emphasizes the close relationships that periodontics and orthodontics must maintain during the multidisciplinary treatment of the adult patient. Under no consideration this publication is intended to include all and each of the aspects that should be considered in this close relationship. Many of those aspects will be discussed in future articles.  The objective has been to outline and highlight some of the areas in which this cooperation could benefit the treatment of patients with complex problems to be solved. It is evident that at the present it is not possible to continue considering orthodontic treatment as limited to children and adolescents. The knowledge gained in bone biology and tissue response to light forces, as well as in the etiology and prevention of periodontal problems, give the basis for the incorporation of orthodontics to the treatment of adult patients. This is possible independently of their age and periodontal involvement, if periodontal health can be achieved and maintained. If the cooperation, understanding and coordination of the different specialties can be achieved during the joint treatment of the patient, the multiple problems that these patients could present could be solved in a much more satisfactory manner. In this fashion it will be possible to achieve the final objective of modern dentistry that is to restore form, function and esthetics for many years.
