Abstract

GUZMAN, José F.; MACAGNO, Laura Elvira  and  IMFELD, Fabian. Motivation of sport coaches: an study from self-determination theory. CPD [online]. 2013, vol.13, n.1, pp.37-50. ISSN 1989-5879.

The aim of this study was to analyze in a sample of 506 coaches their perception of: need satisfaction, perception of usefulness, self-determined motivation, and promotion of athletes' well-being, as well as differences by gender, age and type of sport. Moreove, it was examined whether the relationship between the analysed variables corresponded to the postulates of the Self-Determination Theory (SDT) (Deci y Ryan, 1985a, b, 2000, Ryan y Deci, 2007). The descriptive analysis indicated that coaches in general showed high levels of need satisfaction, self-determined motivation and promotion of well-being, and that these variables were related among them in line with the principles of the SDT. Women showed greater motivation and generally identified themselves having more promotion of well-being: self-control, social support, competence promotion and relatedness promotion. As coaches become older they progressively showed higher levels of perceived usefulness, self-determined motivation and promotion of well-being. Finally, individual sports' coaches showed higher values on need satisfaction and promotion of well-being, while in terms of motivation they exhibit higher levels of both intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, with no differences in self-determination.

Keywords : Need satisfaction; well-being; sex; age and type of sport.
