Professionalism is central to the practice of medicine. It is at the heart of the relationship of trust patients and their families have with individual doctors and also the tacit compact that the medical profession has with society. It is a thing so precious that we need to pay special attention to it not only in the lifetime practice of a doctors but additionally ensuring that it is discussed and developed in the doctors of tomorrow. This article discusses the importance of teaching and assessing professionalism beginning at the very start of medical education and training.
