ALVARADO-PRADO, Rebeca; SALAZAR UGALDE, Marianela e BRENES VASQUEZ, Laura. Self-perceived stress and associated factors in public transport drivers in the greater metropolitan area of Costa Rica. Rev Asoc Esp Espec Med Trab [online]. 2025, vol.34, n.1, pp.61-73. Epub 12-Maio-2025. ISSN 3020-1160.
Introduction:
Stress is a multifactorial public health issue that affects various levels: individual, family, community, and social
Material and Methods:
A quantitative analytical study was conducted among bus drivers in the Greater Metropolitan Area of Costa Rica. In the pilot test, the ILO-WHO Occupational Stress Scale was used to assess stress; however, due to issues with understanding the items, during data collection, participants’ self-perception of stress (low or high, for analysis purposes) was consulted from a subjective standpoint.
Results:
The prevalence of self-reported high stress was 24.8%, associated with fare collection, having rest time between shifts, and a previously defined meal schedule. Meanwhile, having an adequate seat during driving was considered a protective factor.
Conclusions:
The stress experienced by bus drivers is mediated by social and labor determinants, which can be prevented within their work environments, supported by public policies that ensure well-being and health for this population.
