Peter Fürst

 

El pasado día 11 de Diciembre falleció el Prof. Peter Fürst, uno de los científicos más insignes en el campo de la nutrición artificial y muy conocido en nuestro país, no sólo por sus publicaciones originales sino por la frecuencia en que nos ha visitado y participado en eventos científicos.

Fürst había nacido en Budapest, donde estudió Medicina.

En 1956, como consecuencia de su participación activa en las revueltas políticas húngaras, buscó asilo político en Austria y posteriormente emigró a Suecia, donde terminó los estudios de Medicina y a continuación estudió Bioquímica. En este país ocupó diversos cargos científicos, llegando a ser Director del Laboratorio de Investigación Metabólica del Hospital Saint Erik de Estocolmo desde 1972 a 1981. Posteriormente se trasladó a Stuttgart (Alemania) donde fue, entre otras cosas, catedrático y jefe del Departamento del Instituto de Química Biológica y Nutrición de la Universidad de Hohenheim.

Fürst trabajó en múltiples campos relacionados con la Nutrición, fundamentalmente en el metabolismo de aminoácidos y péptidos, carnitina, fosfolípidos, eicosanoides, calorimetría, nutracéuticos, radicales libres y otras sustancias. Fürst era uno de los mayores expertos mundiales en el estudio y desarrollo de la glutamina.

La lista de sus publicaciones científicas alcanza el medio millar y como viajero infatigable que era, recorrió el mundo entero impartiendo docencia.

Ha recibido múltiples honores y distinciones y ha sido profesor visitante en diversas universidades prestigiosas de los cinco continentes. Participó activamente en la fundación de ESPEN y contribuyó desde distintas posiciones al desarrollo de la sociedad. Fürst era miembro del comité editorial de veinte revistas relacionadas con la Nutrición, entre las que se incluyen JPEN, Clinical Nutrition y Nutrition. A España vino muchas veces. Su última visita fue para participar activamente en el Congreso Nacional de la SENPE que se celebró en León en 2002.

Fürst deja mujer y tres hijos.

THE LEGACY OF PROFESSOR PETER FÜRST FOR LATIN AMERICA

Peter Fürst first visit to São Paulo was for the Brazilian Congress of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition in 1991.

After that I had many more opportunities to share the pleasure of his company and learn with him how to think and to evaluate people, science, arts and gastronomy .

But taking aside my personal relationship with Peter that undoubtedly was important for my own personal enrichment as a researcher and a person I would like to reflect about his role in the development of Clinical Nutrition in Latin America.

Without incurring in mistake we can say that Brazil, in particular, but also many Latin America countries were brought to the international scenario of clinical nutrition thanks to Peter enthusiasm and more that everything his deep believe in diversity of minds and capacity to find the best in people.

In many Europeans and Americans forums Peter was a permanent fighter for the Latin Americans. He was always looking after the opening of opportunities for us in congresses, courses, papers and other positions.

In spite of his hectic schedule of work and commitments he never refused an invitation to travel to Latin America to deliver his always enlightening lectures. At our countries he was always ready to visit laboratories and to discuss research and science with young scientists looking for ways to collaborate and stimulate research.

The result of his commitment to Latin America can be measured by many papers published with his collaboration and a clear grow of physicians interested in clinical nutrition research.

Peter always had a nice word for the young researcher. In the beginning of 2004 he came to visit my lab at the University of Sao Paulo Medical School and he spend long hours discussing methods and science with young students and researchers. I will never forget his attentive look and smile talking to those students.

Peter Fürst legacy for us will be always in our mind. We will remember him by his deep scientific honesty and fierce perseverance, a permanent drive to educate, a kind gentleman full of courtesy and love for living.

I am sure that in Latin America his legacy will continue to stimulate us to promote and research in the field of clinical nutrition that he loved so much
