Son excepcionalmente ricos en vitamina C, ya que los kiwis verdes duplican la cantidad que tienen las fresas o naranjas, y el kiwi de color amarillo incluso la triplica. Además, los kiwis tienen un elevado contenido en vitaminas E, K, folatos, carotenoides, potasio, fibra y otros fitoquímicos, que proporcionan no solo beneficios nutricionales, sino también sanitarios. El consumo regular de kiwi en el contexto de una dieta equilibrada tiene efectos beneficiosos sobre la función inmune y defensa antioxidante; en la función gastrointestinal, mejorando la digestión proteica y el estreñimiento; y en el tracto respiratorio superior, ayudando en la prevención de infecciones y mejorando su sintomatología. Por último, el consumo habitual de kiwi se ha asociado a mejoras del estado de ánimo. La mayoría de estos beneficios pueden deberse al elevado contenido de vitamina C del kiwi, pero también a los otros nutrientes y fitoquímicos que actúan de forma sinérgica en la matriz alimentaria. Los resultados de los estudios realizados hasta ahora sugieren que el consumo diario de kiwi puede ser una estrategia efectiva para la promoción de la salud y prevención de numerosas enfermedades.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Both the Green® kiwifruit (Actinidia deliciosa) and the Sungold® one (A. chinensis) stand out among other commonly consumed fruits for their nutritional composition. They are fruits exceptionally rich in vitamin C, since green kiwi fruit have twice and Sungold® have three times the same amount of the vitamin of strawberries or oranges. Kiwifruit is very rich in vitamins E, K, folates, carotenoids, potassium, fiber and other phytochemicals. Regular consumption of kiwifruit, in the context of a balanced diet, has proven to have beneficial effects on immune function and antioxidant defense; also in the gastrointestinal function, improving protein digestion and constipation; and in the upper respiratory tract, preventing infections and improving their symptoms. Finally, regular consumption of kiwifruit has been associated with improvements in mood. Most of these benefits may be due not only to the high content of vitamin C of the kiwifruit, but also to other nutrients and phytochemicals that work synergistically in the food matrix. The results of the studies suggest that the daily consumption of kiwifruit can be an effective strategy for health promotion and prevention of numerous diseases.]]></p></abstract>

<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">El kiwi es una baya comestible de un arbusto le&ntilde;oso del g&eacute;nero <i>Actinidia.</i> Hay numerosas especies dentro de este g&eacute;nero, pero las m&aacute;s conocidas comercialmente son la <i>Actinidia deliciosa</i> variedad "Hayward", que corresponde al kiwi Green<sup>&reg;</sup>, de color verde, y la <i>Actinidia chinensis</i>, variedad "Hort 16A", que es el kiwi Sungold<sup>&reg;</sup>, de color amarillo (1). El kiwi verde es un fruto oval, del tama&ntilde;o de un huevo grande de gallina, con una piel peluda de color marr&oacute;n brillante, y con carne trasl&uacute;cida y de color verde con semillas en filas negras que son comestibles (2,3). El sabor es dulce, fuerte y algo picante. La variedad Sungold<sup>&reg;</sup> se caracteriza porque la carne tiene un color amarillo brillante, con piel lisa, sin pelo, y de sabor mucho m&aacute;s dulce y tropical (2,3).</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>Composici&oacute;n nutricional del kiwi</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Hasta hace poco se dispon&iacute;a de datos muy limitados sobre la composici&oacute;n del kiwi. En la <a href="#t1">tabla I</a> se presenta la composici&oacute;n nutricional de las dos variedades de kiwi que se comercializan en este momento, la verde y la amarilla (4). La <a href="#f1">figura 1</a> muestra el porcentaje de las ingestas recomendadas (IR) (5) de energ&iacute;a y nutrientes de un adulto var&oacute;n de 20 a 40 a&ntilde;os, que queda cubierto con 100 g de porci&oacute;n comestible de ambos tipos de kiwi.</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><a name="t1"><img src="/img/revistas/nh/v33s4/05_original_tabla1.jpg"></font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><a name="f1"><img src="/img/revistas/nh/v33s4/05_original_fig1.jpg"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Puede considerarse que el kiwi tiene un bajo contenido en energ&iacute;a, ya que 100 g proporcionan solo el 3% de una dieta media de 2.000 kcal. Sin embargo, es destacable el elevado contenido en vitamina C, ya que 100 g de la variedad verde permiten cubrir algo m&aacute;s del 150% de las recomendaciones de vitamina C de un adulto de 20 a 40 a&ntilde;os, y m&aacute;s del 260% en el caso del kiwi amarillo (<a href="#f1">Fig. 1</a>). De hecho, el kiwi supera en cuanto a contenido en vitamina C a otras frutas habituales en nuestra dieta, y que son conocidas como fuente de esta vitamina. En concreto, el kiwi verde tiene dos veces m&aacute;s vitamina C que naranjas o fresas y el kiwi amarillo el triple (<a href="#t2">Tabla II</a>). A esto hay que a&ntilde;adir que los estudios en humanos sugieren que la biodisponibilidad de la vitamina C del kiwi es similar a la de los suplementos (6), y en los estudios en animales parece que es incluso algo superior (7).</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p>&nbsp;</p>     <p align="center"><a name="t2"><img src="/img/revistas/nh/v33s4/05_original_tabla2.jpg"></a></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Hay que destacar adem&aacute;s el contenido en otras vitaminas como los folatos, especialmente en el caso del kiwi Sungold<sup>&reg;</sup>, que tiene cantidades similares a las naranjas y superiores al de otras frutas. Tambi&eacute;n tienen cantidades significativas de las vitaminas liposolubles E y K (como filoquinona). En este sentido, el kiwi es comparable al aguacate en cuanto a su contenido en vitamina E, la otra &uacute;nica fruta que tiene cantidades significativas de esta vitamina. Durante mucho tiempo se pens&oacute; que la vitamina E del kiwi se encontraba solo en las semillas y que por tanto no era biodisponible (1), pero parece que esto es un mito, ya que la carne de kiwi tambi&eacute;n contiene vitamina E (8) y el consumo de cualquiera de las dos variedades de kiwi aumenta las cifras de vitamina E en plasma (9,10), lo que demuestra que se absorbe. En cuanto a los minerales, el contenido en potasio es comparable al de los pl&aacute;tanos, otra fuente conocida de este mineral, y tiene m&aacute;s del doble que cualquier otra fruta (<a href="#t2">Tabla II</a>).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Aparte de las naranjas, si los comparamos con otras frutas, ambos tipos de kiwis son tambi&eacute;n una buena fuente de carotenoides, tanto de betacarotenos como de lute&iacute;na y zeaxantina. Estos carotenoides son responsables del color amarillo del kiwi Sungold<sup>&reg;</sup>. El kiwi verde tambi&eacute;n tiene estos carotenoides, pero su carne presenta un alto contenido en clorofila que enmascara el color amarillo t&iacute;pico de estos pigmentos (2).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Tambi&eacute;n es fuente de fibra, tanto total como insoluble, especialmente el kiwi verde Green<sup>&reg;</sup>, que tiene un contenido superior al de otras frutas (<a href="#t2">Tabla II</a>). El contenido en fibra soluble es menor que el de naranjas, pero comparable al de manzanas, pl&aacute;tanos y fresas (11). Por otro lado, el kiwi no es una fuente significativa de prote&iacute;na, ya que apenas contribuye a cubrir un 2% de las ingestas recomendadas. Sin embargo, lo que tiene m&aacute;s inter&eacute;s en este caso son las diferentes fracciones proteicas y enzimas que est&aacute;n presentes en forma natural en el kiwi, siendo la m&aacute;s notable de ellas la actinidina, una proteasa t&iacute;pica de este g&eacute;nero de frutas, con reconocida capacidad para hidrolizar prote&iacute;nas (11), como se comentar&aacute; m&aacute;s adelante.</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">En resumen, tanto la variedad de kiwi verde como la amarilla son alimentos con bajo contenido en energ&iacute;a y alto en agua, fibra, vitamina C y otros nutrientes como potasio, vitaminas E y K y folatos, lo que hace que sean productos de elevada calidad nutricional muy recomendables en todas las edades y situaciones fisiol&oacute;gicas, as&iacute; como en dietas en las que se controla el contenido cal&oacute;rico, como es el caso del control de peso.</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>Beneficios sanitarios del consumode kiwi</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Algunos estudios han analizado los posibles beneficios sanitarios asociados al consumo de kiwi, bien por su contenido en vitamina C y otras sustancias antioxidantes, bien por su contenido en fibra y en actinidina. Entre los analizados se encuentra su papel beneficioso como antioxidante y para mejorar la funci&oacute;n inmunitaria, la mejora de la funci&oacute;n del tracto digestivo y respiratorio, y la mejora del estado de &aacute;nimo.</font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>BENEFICIOS PARA LA FUNCI&Oacute;N INMUNITARIA Y PROTECCI&Oacute;N ANTIOXIDANTE</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Ya se ha comentado el elevado contenido en vitamina C del kiwi (<a href="#t1">Tabla I</a>), que es un reconocido antioxidante hidrosoluble. Adem&aacute;s, el kiwi contiene otras sustancias como son la vitamina E, lute&iacute;na, zeaxantina y fitoqu&iacute;micos, muchas de ellas con propiedades antioxidantes (12).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Se ha demostrado que el consumo regular tanto de kiwi verde como de la variedad amarilla aumenta significativamente la concentraci&oacute;n plasm&aacute;tica de vitaminas antioxidantes, como la C (10,13,14), la E (10) y la de lute&iacute;na/zeaxantina (10,13). Adem&aacute;s, la capacidad antioxidante <i>in vitro</i> del kiwi, si se compara con la de otras frutas, puede considerarse como media-alta, dependiendo del tipo de ensayo realizado (11,12). Algunos autores sugieren que es m&aacute;s adecuado analizar los efectos antioxidantes <i>in vivo</i> de los alimentos, ya que la capacidad antioxidante <i>in vitro</i> no siempre se relaciona con la capacidad <i>in vivo</i> (11). En este sentido, los estudios realizados tambi&eacute;n han demostrado que el consumo de kiwi se asocia con un aumento de la capacidad antioxidante. Por ejemplo, consumir kiwi verde Green<sup>&reg;</sup> con las comidas aumenta la capacidad antioxidante del plasma posprandial, lo que podr&iacute;a prevenir el estr&eacute;s oxidativo justo despu&eacute;s de las comidas (15). Tambi&eacute;n se ha observado que el consumo de 1 a 3 kiwis diarios durante 3-4 semanas mejora la resistencia del DNA de los linfocitos frente al da&ntilde;o oxidativo (14,16). Adem&aacute;s, el consumo de 4 kiwis Sungold<sup>&reg;</sup> diarios durante 4 semanas se ha asociado con una disminuci&oacute;n de la peroxidaci&oacute;n lip&iacute;dica (10). El consumo de 2 kiwis Sungold<sup>&reg;</sup> diarios durante 4 semanas en varones con insuficiencia en vitamina C (&lt; 50 &mu;mol/L en plasma) mejora los niveles de la vitamina tanto en plasma (que alcanza niveles indicadores de saturaci&oacute;n, en torno a 70 &mu;mol/L) como en neutr&oacute;filos, y mejora tambi&eacute;n significativamente la quimiotaxis y actividad fagocitaria de los neutr&oacute;filos (17). Aunque los efectos a m&aacute;s largo plazo est&aacute;n a&uacute;n por demostrar, todos estos resultados sugieren que el consumo habitual de kiwi puede suponer una protecci&oacute;n frente a enfermedades cardiovasculares por sus efectos sobre el estr&eacute;s oxidativo (11).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>BENEFICIOS PARA EL TRACTO DIGESTIVO</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Tradicionalmente se han reconocido los efectos beneficiosos del kiwi sobre la digesti&oacute;n y el tr&aacute;nsito intestinal. Se han demostrado los efectos positivos y significativos en el tratamiento del estre&ntilde;imiento de ancianos sanos en Nueva Zelanda (18), China (19) y en poblaci&oacute;n espa&ntilde;ola (20), as&iacute; como en pacientes con colon irritable (21). Estos beneficios se deben al contenido en fibra tanto soluble como insoluble, que retiene gran cantidad de agua, aumenta la masa fecal y suaviza el tr&aacute;nsito. Adem&aacute;s, el consumo de kiwi puede tener un efecto prebi&oacute;tico al promover el crecimiento de lactobacilos y bifidobacterias mientras se consume esta fruta (22).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Ya se ha indicado que el kiwi contiene una enzima proteol&iacute;tica muy activa, exclusiva del g&eacute;nero, la actinidina, y que ejerce un efecto beneficioso sobre la digesti&oacute;n proteica (23). En estudios <i>in vitro</i> se ha observado que la actinidina, junto con las proteasas g&aacute;strica e intestinal peptina y pancreatina, mejora la digesti&oacute;n proteica, tanto en el est&oacute;mago como en el intestino delgado (24-26). En los estudios <i>in vivo</i> en animales se ha demostrado que la actinidina aumenta la digesti&oacute;n g&aacute;strica de algunas prote&iacute;nas diet&eacute;ticas (27), especialmente las de mayor tama&ntilde;o (28). Estos resultados apoyan la hip&oacute;tesis de que el consumo de kiwi con las comidas aumenta la hidr&oacute;lisis proteica y facilita la digesti&oacute;n g&aacute;strica, lo que puede ser especialmente beneficioso cuando la secreci&oacute;n de &aacute;cido clorh&iacute;drico no sea &oacute;ptima o en trastornos gastrointestinales funcionales (24).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>BENEFICIOS PARA EL TRACTO RESPIRATORIO SUPERIOR</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Uno de los problemas respiratorios m&aacute;s frecuentes son las infecciones del tracto respiratorio superior, en concreto catarro y gripe. El kiwi contiene nutrientes y fitoqu&iacute;micos asociados relacionados con el bienestar del sistema inmune, como son la vitamina C, E y K, folatos, carotenoides, potasio y polifenoles (<a href="#t1">Tabla I</a>) (29,30). De hecho, el consumo de kiwi aumenta la fagocitosis y los niveles de inmunoglobulinas, la actividad de las c&eacute;lulas NK, la activaci&oacute;n de c&eacute;lulas T y la producci&oacute;n de citoquinas (11,31), y por su actividad antioxidante protege a las c&eacute;lulas del sistema inmunitario del da&ntilde;o oxidativo, y la consecuente p&eacute;rdida de integridad y fluidez de la membrana (29).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Se ha estudiado el efecto del consumo regular de kiwi en las infecciones del tracto respiratorio superior de ancianos (10) y preescolares (32), dos colectivos con alto riesgo de padecer este tipo de problemas. En ambos casos se compara el consumo habitual de kiwi con el de pl&aacute;tano, una fruta de similar contenido cal&oacute;rico pero menor valor nutricional. En el caso del estudio en ancianos, disminuy&oacute; significativamente la incidencia y duraci&oacute;n del dolor de garganta y la congesti&oacute;n (10). En los ni&ntilde;os, mientras se consume kiwi se reduce a la mitad la probabilidad de padecer catarro y enfermedades tipo gripe, y tambi&eacute;n disminuye la severidad de otros problemas asociados, como por ejemplo la disminuci&oacute;n del apetito, el malestar general, dolor de cabeza y decaimiento (32). Estos efectos positivos pueden deberse no solo al elevado contenido en vitamina C, sino tambi&eacute;n a otras vitaminas y compuestos con actividad antioxidante del kiwi, ya que el estudio en ancianos demostr&oacute; que aumentaron significativamente no solo los niveles plasm&aacute;ticos de vitamina C, sino tambi&eacute;n los de alfa-tocoferol, de lute&iacute;na/zeaxantina y la concentraci&oacute;n eritrocitaria de folato (10). Y aunque no se observaron cambios en la capacidad antioxidante del plasma, s&iacute; disminuyeron los niveles de malonildialdeh&iacute;do, lo que indica que la peroxidaci&oacute;n lip&iacute;dica disminuy&oacute; con el consumo de kiwi (10).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>BENEFICIOS PARA EL ESTADO DE &Aacute;NIMO</b></font></p>     ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">El consumo elevado de frutas y verduras, por su elevado contenido en vitaminas, se ha relacionado con mayor bienestar psicol&oacute;gico (33) y menor depresi&oacute;n (34). Por otro lado, la deficiencia de vitamina C se asocia con s&iacute;ntomas de depresi&oacute;n, fatiga e irritabilidad (35), y la suplementaci&oacute;n con polivitam&iacute;nicos ha demostrado mejorar el funcionamiento mental y el estado de &aacute;nimo de individuos diagnosticados de estr&eacute;s (36), y tambi&eacute;n en los aparentemente sanos (37). Esto sugiere que las alteraciones del &aacute;nimo se pueden deber a deficiencias nutricionales, incluso subcl&iacute;nicas (38).</font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Recientemente, el kiwi ha sido objeto de estudio como alimento con potencial efecto positivo en el estado de &aacute;nimo en individuos que tengan un consumo insuficiente de frutas y verduras y que tengan insuficiencia de vitamina C (&lt; 50 mmol/L en plasma) (38). El consumo de 2 kiwis diarios de la variedad amarilla durante 6 semanas (que aportaron una cantidad equivalente a 200 mg/d de vitamina C) disminuy&oacute; la fatiga, aument&oacute; la energ&iacute;a y mejor&oacute; el estado de &aacute;nimo general, aunque solo fue significativo en los que presentaban un peor estado de &aacute;nimo al inicio del estudio. Estos efectos se observaron solo con el consumo de 2 kiwis diarios, mientras que el consumo de una cantidad inferior, medio kiwi al d&iacute;a, no demostr&oacute; ning&uacute;n efecto. Por otro lado, cuando se consumen dos kiwis diarios los niveles plasm&aacute;ticos aumentan hasta casi la saturaci&oacute;n del plasma (unos 63 mmol/L), mientras que el consumo de medio kiwi, aunque permite incrementar los niveles basales, no consigue alcanzar niveles adecuados (46 mmol/L). Estos resultados sugieren que dos kiwis proporcionan la cantidad &oacute;ptima de vitamina C (unos 200 mg) (38).</font></p>     <p>&nbsp;</p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>Conclusi&oacute;n</b></font></p>     <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">El kiwi, en cualquiera de sus variedades, es una fruta de elevado valor nutricional, con mayor densidad de nutrientes que otras frutas de consumo habitual. El consumo regular de kiwi en el contexto de una dieta equilibrada tiene efectos beneficiosos sobre la funci&oacute;n inmune y defensa antioxidante, en la funci&oacute;n gastrointestinal y en el sistema respiratorio, as&iacute; como en el estado de &aacute;nimo. Los numerosos efectos beneficiosos del kiwi se deben a su elevado contenido en vitamina C, pero tambi&eacute;n a otros nutrientes antioxidantes, fibra y fitoqu&iacute;micos, que act&uacute;an de forma sin&eacute;rgica al encontrarse en la misma matriz.
