El presente estudio pretende analizar los efectos del ayuno y del entrenamiento en ayunas en el rendimiento y el metabolismo de manera aguda y crónica. Se realizaron búsquedas en las bases de datos Medline (PubMed), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Cochrane y Google Scholar. En total, se identificaron 767 estudios, de los que finalmente se incluyeron 51. De manera aguda, el ejercicio en ayunas promueve la oxidación de las grasas a intensidades bajas y moderadas mientras que el catabolismo proteico no se ve aumentado. El rendimiento no se ve afectado en los esfuerzos de menos de 1 hora de duración. De manera crónica, el ayuno genera una mayor eficiencia en el metabolismo de las grasas y en la capacidad para regular la glucemia a largo plazo, aunque no se ha podido determinar si estos hallazgos mejoran el rendimiento deportivo en condiciones de alimentación previa. Se necesita más investigación en deportistas de élite, con cargas de entrenamiento elevadas y con un enfoque periodizado del ayuno.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract Recently, fasted exercise has generated interest for its potential to stimulate metabolic and performance adaptations. The present study aims to analyze the effects of fasting and fasted training on performance and metabolism, acutely and chronically. The databases Medline (PubMed), Physiotherapy Evidence Database (PEDro), Cochrane, and Google Scholar were searched. In total, 767 studies were identified. Of those, 51 studies were finally included. Acutely, exercise on fasting promotes fat oxidation at low and moderate intensities, while protein catabolism is not increased. Performance is not affected in efforts lower than 1 hour. Chronically, fasting generates greater efficiency in fat metabolism and the ability to regulate blood glucose in the long term, although it has not been possible to determine whether these findings improve sports performance. More research is needed in elite athletes, with high training loads and with a periodized approach to fasting.]]></p></abstract>
