La calidad asistencial es una necesidad social, profesional y económica. Los planes de calidad son documentos que sirven de guía para organizar todas las actividades que se desarrollarán en material de calidad asistencial en un periodo determinado. El deseo de mejorar la asistencia sanitaria nos llevó a diseñar un nuevo plan de calidad para la unidad de quemados de nuestro hospital.  Material y método. El diseño siguió los pasos del desarrollo de un plan de calidad: identificar la necesidad del plan, identificar las entradas del plan, definir su alcance, analizar el entorno interno y externo y el marco general de actuaciones, reclutar a los líderes jerárquicos y al equipo de trabajo (muestra no probabilística a conveniencia), diseño y redacción del plan, y finalmente revisión, implantación y seguimiento del plan. Se llevó a cabo en la Unidad de Quemados del Hospital Universitario y Politécnico La Fe de Valencia, España, a lo largo de 4.5 años (2019 - 2023).  Resultados. Logramos desarrollar el plan de calidad. No observamos mejoras estadísticamente significativas en la tasa de mortalidad, tasa de neumonías ni tasa de bacteriemias. Sí observamos mejoras estadísticamente significativas en el cuestionario sobre seguridad de los pacientes de la Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, donde el personal valoró que había habido mejoras de la seguridad en la Unidad de quemados, especialmente en el ámbito de la comunicación.  Conclusiones. Los planes de calidad son útiles para mejorar la calidad asistencial en las unidades de quemados. Los principales retos para su desarrollo e implantación son la comunicación y las resistencias. Es importante formar al equipo en calidad asistencial, para que el personal pueda entender qué se está haciendo y por qué, y motivarlo al cambio.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Background and objective. Healthcare quality is a social, professional, and economical necessity. Quality improvement programs seek to guide and organize all the activities that will be carried out in terms of quality of care in a given period. The desire to improve healthcare led us to design and implement a new quality improvement program for the burn unit of our hospital.  Methos. The design followed the standard steps of quality improvement program development: identification of reasons why the program is needed, identification of the inputs of the program, definition of its scope, analysis of the internal and external environment and the general framework of actions, recruitment of the hierarchical leaders and the team that will work on the program&#8217;s implementation (convenience sampling), design and writing of the program, and finally review, implementation and monitoring of the program. It was carried out in the Burn Unit of University and Polytechnic Hospital La Fe in Valencia, Spain, over 4.5 years (2019 - 2023).  Results. The quality improvement program was developed. No statistically significant improvements were observed in the mortality rate, pneumonia rate, or bacteremia rate. Statistically significant improvements were observed in the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality's Survey on Patient Safety Culture, which reflected improvements in patient safety in the Unit perceived by the staff, especially regarding communication.  Conclusions. Quality improvement programs are useful to improve the quality of care in burn units. The main challenges for their development and implementation are communication and resistances. It is important to train the team in quality of care, so that staff can understand what is being done and why, and motivate them to change.]]></p></abstract>
