</front><body><![CDATA[ <p><font face="Verdana" size="2"><b>CARTAS AL DIRECTOR</b></p>      <p>&nbsp;</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="4"><b>Oxígeno-ozonoterapia: una realidad médica</b></p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="4"><b>Oxygen-ozone theraphy: a medical reality</b></p>      <p>&nbsp;</p>      <p>&nbsp;</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Sr. Director:</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">En el último número de la revista de nuestra Sociedad<sup>1</sup>, el Dr. Torres, en su editorial sobre la fibromialgia, hizo referencia al tratamiento con aplicaciones de oxígeno-ozonoterapia sistémica; concretamente, se refirió a las administraciones de auototransfusiones de sangre ozonizada.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Realmente es de agradecer este apunte. Por desgracia, los tratamientos con ozono médico presentan con frecuencia el descrédito que surge del desconocimiento médico. Sin embargo, actualmente disponemos de un soporte científico, tanto a nivel preclínico como clínico, sobradamente avalado por publicaciones en revistas de prestigio.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Recientemente, el Dr. Bocci, quien colaboró en un monográfico sobre ozonoterapia publicado en nuestra revista<sup>2</sup> publicó un <i>brief report</i> en la revista <i>Archives of Medical Research<sup>3</sup></i>, donde dejaba claro que el ozono, una de las mayores sustancias con capacidad oxidativa de la naturaleza, es indudablemente nocivo mediante inhalación, lo que no es óbice para que tenga excelentes efectos terapéuticos, sin riesgo alguno, cuando se administra por otras vías.</p>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">El ozono médico se puede usar como un fármaco más con actividad reguladora general, que ejerce sus efectos al estabilizar el equilibrio rédox celular.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Realmente las aplicaciones sucesivas de ozono médico a escala general (sistémicas) redundan en una mayor capacidad de los eritrocitos para ceder oxígeno, lo que supone, a grandes rasgos, una mejora en la capacidad celular para autorrepararse<sup>4,5</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">La acción médica del ozono parece ser capaz de mejorar las condiciones endoteliales, según los excelentes resultados publicados en un ensayo clínico aleatorizado (<i>European Journal of Pharmacology</i>), donde las recuperaciones de úlceras en pacientes diabéticos son altamente significativas<sup>6</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">También se ha demostrado en un trabajo publicado en <i>Liver Internacional<sup>7</sup></i> el efecto beneficioso de este gas sobre otro, el óxido nítrico, crucial en mantener en niveles óptimos la dilatación capilar y, por tanto, el flujo sanguíneo, y las perspectivas en pacientes críticos son muy alentadoras<sup>8</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Según un grupo de investigadores del departamento de fisiología de la Universidad de Siena, los lIpoperóxidos y el peróxido de hidrógeno, fruto de la descomposición del ozono se comportan como moléculas señalizadoras de estrés, lo que mejora el equilibrio energético celular y el sistema inmune en beneficio de enfermedades como son la psoriasis, el asma o la artritis reumatoide<sup>9,10</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Las aplicaciones controladas de ozono médico mejoran la maquinaria antioxidante celular, y activan agentes antioxidantes, como el glutatión reducido o la superóxido dismutasa, de ahí la enorme efectividad que ha demostrado la ozonoterapia en modelos de isquemia/reperfusión, tanto hepática como cardíaca o renal<sup>6,11-14</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">El ozono actúa como un verdadero "basurero" celular, limpiando los radicales libres. En un organismo preacondicionado con ozono, el daño después de presentar un infarto sería bastante menor, lo que avalaría las aplicaciones preventivas en situaciones de riesgo coronario y cerebrovascular<sup>15-17</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Un modelo clásico de enfermedad asociada directamente a la muerte celular por radicales libres es la retinosis pigmentaria, y también hay trabajos, ensayo clínico incluido, que avalan unos excelentes resultados en estos pacientes<sup>18,19</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Como vemos, se pueden leer trabajos de excelente rigor y calidad en revistas tan prestigiosas como <i>Nature</i>, <i>Transplant Internacional</i>, <i>Shock</i>, <i>Free Radicals</i>, <i>Mediators of Inflamation</i>, <i>Internacional Journal of Pharmacology</i>, <i>Pharmacological Research</i>, <i>Liver International</i>, etc.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">La repercusión médica es tal, que los congresos nacionales e internacionales se suceden y las sociedades científicas proliferan y van a más; anualmente hay reuniones de interés. Son de resaltar las jornadas del pasado 22 de septiembre de 2007 en la Clínica Teknon, de Barcelona, sobre los beneficios del ozono a escala cardiovascular y oncológica. La aplicación de ozonoterapia en tumorales no es algo injustificado<sup>20-25</sup>, aunque los trabajos son muy preliminares y el esfuerzo en este sentido debería de intensificarse. En los últimos años se han publicado una serie de trabajos sobre el aumento del flujo cerebral, la mejor oxigenación muscular y la buena evolución de pacientes con tumores avanzados de cabeza y cuello mediante ozonoterapia coadyuvante<sup>26,27</sup>.</p>      ]]></body>
<body><![CDATA[<p><font face="Verdana" size="2">El Dr. Schultz, de la Universidad de Marburg (Alemania), acaba de publicar en <i>International Journal of Cancer</i>, la remisión completa de carcinoma de células escamosas inoculado en conejos mediante neumoperitoneo de oxígeno/ ozono<sup>28</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">La ozonoterapia consiste en la aplicación de mínimas concentraciones de ozono médico (O<sub>3</sub>) combinado con oxígeno medicinal (O<sub>2</sub>), a partir del cual se sintetiza. Tiene lugar una "microoxidación" controlada, cuyo "efecto vacuna" da como respuesta una activación favorable de nuestro sistema antioxidante. Se ha demostrado en clínica y en laboratorio la síntesis de glóbulos rojos capaces de transportar y de ceder mayores cantidades de oxígeno a todas las células<sup>29</sup>.</p>      <p><font face="Verdana" size="2">Creemos nuestro deber alentar el esfuerzo investigador hacia esta realidad.
