Método: O estudo do tipo experimental contou com 30 idosos (66.4 ± 6.2 anos) de ambos os sexos. Os idosos foram submetidos aos testes de apoio tandem (equilíbrio estático), com e sem privação visual, e ao Four Square Step Test (equilíbrio dinâmico). Em seguida, de forma aleatória, os idosos foram divididos em 2 grupos, onde um grupo executou 10 repetições de agachamento em superfície estável e outro grupo em superfície instável. Após um minuto, os idosos realizaram novamente os testes de equilíbrio. Sete dias após, os idosos realizaram o mesmo procedimento, no entanto, inverteram o tipo de superfície do agachamento. O teste de Wilcoxon foi utilizado para comparar os valores pré e pós&#8208;intervenção. O nível de significância adotado foi de p &lt; 0.05.  Resultados: No teste de equilíbrio estático, somente na situação com privação visual foram encontradas diferenças significativas, tanto após o agachamento estável (p = 0.015) como no instável (p = 0.003). Já no equilíbrio dinâmico, apenas após o agachamento instável foi observada diferença significativa (p = 0.026). Ambas as diferenças representam melhoras no desempenho dos testes.  Conclusão: Conclui&#8208;se que a intervenção em superfície instável apresentou melhores impactos no desempenho do equilíbrio dos idosos do presente estudo. Desta forma, ressaltamos a importância da avaliação do equilíbrio na população idosa, para assim direcionar um programa de treinamento mais adequado para essa população.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="es"><p><![CDATA[Resumen  Objetivo: El objetivo del presente estudio fue investigar el efecto agudo de una única serie de sentadillas, realizadas sobre una superficie estable y otra inestable, en el equilibrio estático y dinámico de ancianos.  Método: El estudio de tipo experimental incluyó 30 ancianos (66.4 ± 6.2 años) de ambos sexos. Los ancianos fueron sometidos a pruebas de apoyo tandem (equilibrio estático) con y sin privación visual y Four Square Step Test (equilibrio dinámico). Los ancianos fueron divididos aleatoriamente en dos grupos, un grupo realizó 10 repeticiones de sentadillas sobre una superficie estable y otro grupo en una superficie inestable. Después de un minuto, los ancianos realizan nuevamente pruebas de equilibrio. Siete días más tarde, los ancianos realizan el mismo procedimiento, en esta ocasión invirtiendo el tipo de superficie sobre la que se realizaron las sentadillas. Se utilizó el test de Wilcoxon para comparar los resultados de antes y después de la intervención. El nivel de significación se fijó en p &lt; 0.05.  Resultados: En la prueba de equilibrio estático, las diferencias con privación visual, fueron significativas, tanto después de sentadillas en superficie estable (p = 0.015) como en inestable (p = 0.003). En el equilibrio dinámico, sólo después de la sentadilla en superficie inestable se observó una diferencia significativa (p = 0.026). Ambas diferencias representan mejoras en la realización de las pruebas.  Conclusiones: Concluimos que la intervención sobre una superficie inestable mostró mejores impactos en el rendimiento del equilibrio de nuestros pacientes de edad avanzada. Destacamos la importancia de la prueba de equilibrio en los ancianos y así proponer un programa de entrenamiento más adecuado para esta población.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[Abstract  Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the acute effect of a single set of squat performed on a stable and unstable surface on the static and dynamic balance in elderly.  Method: The experimental study included 30 elderly (66.4 ± 6.2 age) of both sexes. The elderly were submitted to tandem stance tests (static balance) with and without visual deprivation and to the Four Square Step Test (dynamic balance). Then, randomly, the elderly were divided into two groups, one group performed 10 repetitions of squats on a stable surface and another group on an unstable surface. After 1minute, the elderly repeated the balance tests. Seven days later, the elderly performed the same procedure, however, inverted the type of squat surface. The Wilcoxon test was used to compare the pre&#8208; and post&#8208;intervention. The significance level was set at p &lt; 0.05.  Results: In static balance test, only after the situation with visual deprivation were observed significant differences both after stable squat (p = 0.015) and after unstable (p = 0.003). In the dynamic balance, just after the unstable squat was observed significant difference (p = 0.026). Both differences represent improvements in the performance of the tests.  Conclusion: It is concluded that the intervention on an unstable surface showed better impacts on the elderly's balance performance. Thus, we emphasize the importance of the balance assessment in elderly people and so direct a more appropriate training program for this population.]]></p></abstract>
