El objetivo fue evaluar la ingesta de calcio y su relación con el sobrepeso y la obesidad en adolescentes mujeres (14-19 años) de Ecuador, entre 2015 y 2016.  Material y Métodos El estudio fue descriptivo, analítico, transversal y correlacional. El estado nutricional se evaluó en 1.211 adolescentes mujeres utilizando los indicadores IMC/edad, talla/edad, porcentaje de grasa y circunferencia de la cintura; la ingesta de calcio se midió en una muestra de 294 adolescentes diagnosticadas con sobrepeso y/u obesidad a través del método recordatorio de 24 horas (R24h) y el cuestionario de frecuencia de consumo alimentario (CFCA).  Resultado El 21,1% del total de la población presentó sobrepeso y 4% obesidad según IMC/edad y 28,7% sobrepeso, 7,9% obesidad según porcentaje de grasa. El indicador talla/edad determinó 30% de retardo en talla. La ingesta promedio de Ca fue 403,5mg/día. No se encontró una relación significativa entre la ingesta de Ca determinado por R24h ni CFCA y la adiposidad. Se encontró asociación significativa entre la adecuación de calcio y el IMC.  Conclusiones No existe relación entre la ingesta de calcio y el incremento del tejido graso en las adolescentes analizadas.]]></p></abstract>
<abstract abstract-type="short" xml:lang="en"><p><![CDATA[ABSTRACT  Introduction The consumption of dietary calcium, particularly from dairy products, is associated with the reduction of fat mass and body weight. The aim was evaluate calcium intake and its relationships with overweight and obesity in adolescent females (14-19 years) from Ecuador between 2015 and 2016.  Material and Methods The study was descriptive, analytical, cross-sectional and correlative. Nutritional status was assessed in 1,211 females adolescent using the BMI/age, height/age, fat percentage and waist circumference. Calcium intake was measured in a sample of 294 adolescents diagnosed as being overweight and/or obese through the 24-hour reminder and food frequency consumption method.  Results 21.1% of the total population presented overweight and 4% obesity according to BMI/age and 28.7% overweight, 7.9% obesity according to fat percentage. The mean Ca intake was 403.5mg/day. There was no significant relation between Ca intake determined by 24-hour reminder and food frequency consumption and adiposity. There was a significant association between Ca intake and BMI.  Conclusions There is not relationship between calcium intake and increasing of fatty tissue in the female adolescents studied.]]></p></abstract>
