Abstract

ARDILA MEDINA, C.M.; ALZATE VEGA, J.  and  GUZMAN ZULUAGA, I.C.. Correlation of gram-negative enteric rods with clinical and demographic parameters of chronic periodontitis patients. Avances en Periodoncia [online]. 2014, vol.26, n.2, pp.77-82. ISSN 2340-3209.

Introduction: The Gram-negative enteric rods present in subgingival plaque of patients with periodontitis may represent a cause of failure in periodontal therapy. Objective: to investigate the correlation of enteric Gram-negative rods with clinical parameters, age, sex and smoking habits of patients with chronic periodontitis. Materials and Methods: we studied the presence of Gram-negative enteric rods in 76 patients with chronic periodontitis. Subgingival samples were processed by culture. We used the Spearman test to determine the correlation between clinical, demographic and smoking in the presence of Gram-negative enteric rods (p<0.05). Results and conclusions: There were Gram-negative enteric rods in 26.31% of patients. We found a statistically significant positive correlation between Gram-negative enteric bacilli and parameters increasing age, male gender, smoking, increased probing depth and clinical attachment loss, presence of plaque and bleeding (r = 0.107; 0.235; 0.106; 0.165; 0.194; 0.123; 0.109; p<0.0001, respectively). These findings have important therapeutic implications to be taken into account in the management of patients with periodontitis that present enteric in subgingival plaque.

Keywords : Chronic periodontitis; subgingival plaque; gram-negative enteric rods.
